We are just a little over a month away from SQL Saturday Nashville! In the weeks leading up to SQL Saturday we are going to get to know our pre-conference speakers. We asked each speaker a series of questions about themselves and their sessions.
First up is Ben Miller, also known as @DBAduck on twitter and his Blog.
Ben has been a member of the SQL Server Community for over 17 years now. He is currently working at MaritzCX revolutionizing the SQL Server environment and loving it. He is a SQL Server MVP and Microsoft Certified Master (MCM) and has spent time in the field using SQL Server since 1997. He has worked at various companies throughout the U.S. as well as at Microsoft for 7 years. He is passionate about SQL Server and automation and integration and uses SMO and PowerShell regularly. He consults as well.
Ben’s topic will be PowerShell Modules for the DBA.
Who should attend this session?
Anyone wanting to learn about commands, not coding in PowerShell other than a little syntax and things to know about PowerShell. I will be going over 2 modules available to all that perform functions against SQL Server instances and databases using PowerShell. It is a Practical Session to get people started in learning how to be a DBA using PowerShell.
What is your favorite thing about teaching this session?
I love SQL Server as a Certified Master and I love automation and doing more work in less time and with less effort, so it is really fun for me to help people learn. I am super passionate about learning.
What 1 piece of great advice do you wish someone would have given you when you first started your career?
Never be afraid to learn and be willing to say “I don’t know” but then to go find out what you did not know.
If you could go back and change the career path that lead you to where you are now would you?
The only thing I would change, and really not sure if I would change it, is to get my degree when I was young instead of when I was 25 years into my career.
Your Twitter handle is @DBAduck, how did you come about such a unique user name and do you use it as your personal branding?
Well, I learned how to speak like Donald Duck really well when I was 8 and have been kid’s best friend since because they love to hear me speak like Donald Duck. So I was known as The Duck for a long time in my career. I became a DBA so my personal brand became DBAduck and have been for a very long time and will retire with that name. My website is dbaduck.com and my branding is all connected to DBAduck so it is a fun time for me.
